ICT Prep
In a Google document, make notes on what you think we've learned in these lessons and, in particular:
what the internet is (and where it came from)
what the web is (and where it came from)
These notes will be the basis for a discussion next week (25 Nov). You will need to use the resources above and also carry out some research of your own. Make a note of which sources you consult and how you evaluated the information they gave you. I'll want to hear what research you carried out and how you evaluated these other sources of information.
You'll need your Google doc notes in class next week and I'm expecting a high standard.
In the lesson, I'll show you how to put your notes on your blog and publish them.
We have learned what an RSS feed is - a tool that allows you to subscribe to websites so that when they are modified, you are alerted, and it more importantly allows you to read these feeds from, for example, a blog.
We have learned how to subscribe to RSS feeds by copying the URL of a particular page and pasting it into an RSS feed box and, sure enough, the RSS will appear on your chosen blog.
The Internet is very powerful; people from opposite corners of the world can communicate with each other simultaneously by simply going onto Internet chat sites such as Facebook and typing in words. People can put videos and pictures onto the web which are extremely quick to load up, considering the amount of servers it may well be being used by and the amount of data in the videos in particular.
The Internet has progressed hugely; when the Internet was first created, it crashed after two letters had been entered into and e-mail; now 35 hours of video content is uploaded to one site alone (YouTube) every minute!
The Web is the software that stores web pages on a computer and makes them available to be accessed by others.Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the WorldWideWeb (WWW), set up the first web server known as "info.cern.ch." at CERN.
The Internet is a worldwide collection of web servers that can be accessed from anywhere in the world.
It was invented by numerous different people; the most important of whom are: Elmer Shapiro (he released a report after a meeting with others from the “Stanford Research Institute” (SRI) called “A Study of Computer Network Design Parameters”); Lawrence Roberts and Barry Wessler, who used this and previous works to help create the final version of the Interface Message Processor (IMP); Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. (BBN) (a company, not a person!) was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP sub network; Ray Tomlinson, who introduced e-mail in 1972; Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn, who designed Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) during 1973 and later published it with the help of Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine in December 1974; Bob Metcalfe, who created Ethernet in 1973; Paul Mockapetris and Jon Postel , who introduced Domain Name System (DNS) in 1984; Tim Berners-Lee, developed HyperText Markup Language (HTML) in 1990 , which made a huge contribution to how we navigate and view the Internet today; Tim Berners-Lee introduces WWW to the public on August 6, 1991.
However the Internet’s creation was not unhindered; The first message, which was meant to be “LOGIN” only turned out as “LO”, due to the fact that the server crashed after these two words had been written. Also, one person sent an e-mail to two friends and they only replied back two years later!

Who invented the Internet?
Lessons 7, 8, 9 of the 4th form lessons 2010-2011.
I evaluated the website “Who invented the Internet” by checking a number of other websites to see that the information was true, which it was. I trusted however, that the St Paul’s notes would be very reliable.
