Grand Armee was originally known as the Channel army, but due to the British admiral Nelson's victory at the battle of Trafalgar, it never acheived its primary objective of invading Great Britain.
However, Austria and Russia were bribed by the hugely wealthy Britain to declare war on France and so Napoleon re- named the Channel Army the Grande Armee.
However, Austria and Russia were bribed by the hugely wealthy Britain to declare war on France and so Napoleon re- named the Channel Army the Grande Armee.
He fought numerous campaigns with this force, including the campaigns of 1805, 1806 and 1807, Wagram and Russia.
In the first four, he acheived amazing success, taking over huge swathes of Europe and humbling the empires of Austria, Prussia and Russia.
However, in the Russian campaign, Napoleon's army was destroyed; he started with just under 600,000 men and finished with less than 100,000.

The British Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, also helped in Napoleon's first defeat by wearing down his troops in Spain and Portugal with the help of those countries's populations. The Iberian peninsular was thus nicknamed by Napoleon "The Ulcer of Europe."
Although he acheived some very good victories in the German and French campaigns, Napoleon was eventually beaten by numbers around three times his size and with troops of better quality than his own at the battle of Leipzig.
He was then banished to the island of Elba, but he came back and, after winning his people's support, in what became known as the hundred days war, fought several battles that cultimated in his very narrow defeat at Waterloo by Wellesley and the Prussian Marshal Blucher.
Napoleon was banished again, this time to the island of St Helena, where he died in 1821.
